We’ve got a nice growing collection of cleaning product reviews on the website here. If you’ve read my previous posts on the popular Method products, you may know that motherhood has spurred me to purchase more eco-friendly and less toxic and chemical-laden cleaning products.

Like a lot of people, we’ve always tended to use Fairy washing up liquid. It’s that bog standard option that we never really question. I have tried cheaper options in the past and they never clean as well or last as long. Fairy really does get the job done and is usually always on offer somewhere.

However, we saw this Ecover washing up liquid on offer for £2 during a random shop to Waitrose and thought to give it a try. It was a good price given the hefty size of the bottle at 950ml.

Ecover is one of the most well known plant based cleaning brands out there and can be found in most large supermarkets. I’ve always seen it in Tesco for instance but I don’t know what it was that deterred me from buying it, either the higher price or the uncrtainty of whether the product will get the job done as well.

The packaging of the product is nice, maybe not as trendy or classy as Method or Kinn perhaps, but still nice. We got the Lemon and Aloe Vera scent but it was very light and not overpowering or artificial smelling at all.

We are an Asian family and although we eat a very varied diet of different cusines, we also like our traditional foods and curries. There’s lots of sauces and spices, especially turmeric, which is notoriously persistent. Even with fairy, some pots will often need a good scrubbing to get rid of any stubborn stains or grease marks. So it’s important that we have a potent washing up liquid.

How did the Ecover washing up liquid hold up against Fairy? Well, it wasn’t quite as powerful at tough stains. For regular plates and dishes, it was fine. But if it was an aluminum or steel pot with dried or burnt food residue, it would require a little more elbow grease. I also found it wasn’t as sudsy as Fairy so I would have to use more of the product when I was washing up. In fact, when my mother in law was staying, she asked if she could use the spare bottle of Fairy liquid in the cupboard and we could use the Ecover as she felt it cleaned better.

So I guess it is a bit of a compromise really. Fairy as a whole does clean your dishes very well but could potentially be more toxic and chemical-laden, or a more natural option that may not clean as well. It may sound obvious when written like that, but when you’re in a busy family home with constant dishes needing to be washed, it’s not always so clear cut. We have now finished our Ecover washing up liquid and have reverted back to Fairy Liquid as we still had one left in the cupboard. I will definitely give Ecover washing up liquid a try again once it runs out however it wouldn’t really be my go-to option and I would definitely look out for other non-toxic options.
